Data Engineer III, Growth Marketing

Expedia Group fiercely competes for potential customers across multiple travel industry marketplaces. We deploy millions of bids daily in these ad marketplaces to acquire traffic for our sites. To make bidding decisions at scale, data scientists build machine learning models to predict the value of a click on an Expedia Group ad. This is where you come in! As the Data Engineer (Tech Lead), you will be as senior member of our team of business-savvy data engineers working with data scientists and marketing teams. You will own the back-end implementation and operation of the bidding technology responsible for spending millions of dollars per day.

Our team is critical in the day-to-day operations of our Metasearch marketing campaigns with partners like Google, Kayak, and TripAdvisor. You will play a meaningful role, reporting to the Senior Manager of Bidding Operations. We act as the glue between our stakeholder groups, building and fortifying the bridge between business and technology. What you’ll do:

  • Effectively apply knowledge of software design principles, data structures and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, and modular

  • Develop expertise in the performance marketing domain and associated data structures allowing you to proactively suggest improvements in our pursuit of operational excellence

  • Use a whole systems approach to analyzing issues by ensuring all components (structure, people, process, and technology) are identified and accounted for

  • Recommend advancements, innovations, and changes in technologies (specifically relating to data engineering, cloud data platforms, data models, business intelligence and data science)

  • Proactively team up with peers across the organization (Data Science, Engineering, Campaign Management, and others) to build an understanding of cross dependencies and shared problem solving

  • Continually seek new technical skills and share knowledge with team to increase effectiveness

  • Recognize areas of inefficiency in code or systems operation and offer suggestions for improvements

Who you are:

  • 5 to 7 years of experience in data engineering with 2+ years mentoring team members

  • Master's in any related field; or equivalent related professional experience

  • Very strong in Python, Spark or PySpark, and SQL; solid understanding of object-oriented programming

  • Built and maintained more than one data pipeline or product in a production environment (bug fixing, troubleshooting, monitoring, etc.)

  • Can make independent decisions within the scope of your project and defend them with data and business context

  • Worked with large volumes of data including different patterns of data ingestion, processing, movement, storage, and access

  • You understand how to design moderately complex systems and your software design is easily testable and observable

  • Experience working closely with Data Scientists, Analysts, and other end-users of your data pipelines and iterating to a better joint outcome
