Life of a Market Associate
Wit Gan | Associate Market Manager in Bangkok
Hey! My name is Wit and I’m going to be running you through what it’s like on a day-to-day basis of a market associate in the Bangkok Office and more. I started my Expedia journey in June of 2017 as an intern straight out of college. It’s been nearly two years as a market associate and I’m also moving roles to become an associate market manager next month! My role at Expedia has taught me so much about myself and the direct impact I have with our partners and customers.
What does your typical work day look like?
I start my days out at 7 with an early morning round of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) before I arrive at the office by 9. I am no means a morning person but working out in the morning gives me crazy energy so I don’t need any coffee. Since I work with 17,000+ hotels, my days are unique dependent upon what type of inquiries I get from my partners. Since my role is very partner-centric and team-based, I collaborate a lot with my coworkers to come up with new ideas to help our partners in a scalable way. Depending on which project we are holding at the time, my day can range from creating email communications templates, handling reactive activities with our partners or proactively reaching out to partners to optimize their production. Currently I’m training for my new role and shadowing some future co-workers.
What have you enjoyed most about working at Expedia Group?
What makes Expedia Group truly great are the people. I’ve never met a more enthusiastic group of individuals and they’ve helped shape our team’s and region’s successes. The Market Management team shows a strong ‘One Team, Group First’ mentality that has positively affected the business.
Who has influenced you the most?
I want to give a shout out my director, Pimpawee (who’s also a woman in a leadership role). She’s a great role model and her actions resonate with everyone in our team.
How did you learn to embrace failure?
I wouldn’t want to say that I’ve failed but embracing how else could I have done it differently attitude in order to improve my own processes, but also my teams and sharing that feedback to one another. It’s difficult through times when you need to juggle with internal projects and spending time speaking with partners. This has taught me a lot on how to prioritize my work, especially in a fast-paced environment.
Tell us about your favorite vacation?
The best vacation I’ve been on is a recent trip to Peru. I spent a week exploring Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. It’s a beautiful country with excellent food and recommend everyone to visit. Alpacas are a huge plus too!
What is your favorite weekend getaway?
Going to the beach at Hua Hin, which is a 3-hour drive from Bangkok. Eating local foods and just hanging out by the beach.
