A Paw-sitive Impact: Volunteering with Anti-Cruelty for Month of Caring

By Angie DeRosa

I’m Angie DeRosa, a Senior Content Strategist within Expedia Group’s Traveler & Partner Services Platform organization. My focus is on enhancing the knowledge management system used by the Vrbo and Hotel Partner support teams. It’s my job to evaluate the current content landscape to ensure our associates can effectively assist thousands of travelers and partners worldwide. This involves reviewing articles, documents, guides, FAQs and email templates, to identify gaps, redundancies, and areas for improvement.

This November marks my three-year anniversary at Expedia Group in Chicago. Reflecting on my journey to get here, I was initially drawn to Expedia Group’s belief that travel is a force for good. This resonated deeply with my lifelong passion about giving back to my community and using my voice for the voiceless.  It’s why without hesitation, and despite being new to the company in 2022, I led my first Month of Caring project. Every September, Expedians are encouraged to volunteer up to eight hours of work time to support various organizations. This initiative, known as Month of Caring, has become a cornerstone of our corporate culture.

Since then, I’ve led multiple Month of Caring projects and now head Chicago’s chapter of Expedia Cares, our employee resource group dedicated to social responsibility. This year marks the 13th annual Month of Caring, and I’ve partnered with the Anti-Cruelty animal shelter to organize a volunteer opportunity for about 30 Chicago-based employees.

Anti-Cruelty holds a special place in my heart. Just before the Covid lockdown in 2020, I adopted my dog Sadie from them. I had never had a dog before or even been a dog person for that matter, but finding Sadie completely changed my life.  Can you be soulmates with a dog? I don’t know, but I do know her and I were meant to be, and I want nothing else but to help the other animals in Anti-Cruelty’s care find their person too.

During our volunteer day, employees from various departments and teams came together to learn about the shelter’s 125th year history, sort donations, and create enrichment toys for the animals currently there. Using materials like t-shirts, pipe cleaners, and recycled paper towel/toilet paper holders, these toys provide essential mental and physical stimulation for pets. We also got to hang out with an available puppy up for adoption named Burr.

Being the only member of my team based in Chicago, I didn’t have anyone I could immediately connect with when I went to the office. Through Month of Caring and Expedia Cares, I’ve met many peers who share my passion for community service. These interactions have enriched my experience at Expedia Group, allowing me to connect with colleagues whose paths I might not have otherwise crossed.  Expedia Group’s annual Month of Caring exemplifies our leadership’s commitment to making tangible differences in the communities we call home. I feel incredibly fortunate to work for a company that aligns with my core values and supports my dedication to social responsibility.
