Kim Kjaerside, Associate Market Manager, Edinburgh, UK
Tell us about your role and your team.
I am currently working as an Associate Market Manager for various regions across Scotland, including Edinburgh and St. Andrews, to name a few, with several key local chains as part of my portfolio. My role is to manage and build on the relationships with our accommodation partners, to make sure they optimise their Expedia listing to help boost their visibility and in return, grow their business. We do this through helping partners to make the most of the tools available and any promotions or campaigns to help boost their profile further. Conversations of support and guidance takes place either online or in face-to-face appointments, often onsite at properties, locally or further afield.
I joined the Expedia Group Scotland Market Management Lodging team in February of 2023. The team is around 10 people covering Scotland and the north of England. We focus on delivering the best for our partners and Expedia Group, doing so through market knowledge and understanding their needs and core strategies. I work with many of our local destination management organisations and align these opportunities with our values and mission: to power global travel for everyone, everywhere!
What is the story behind your ‘EG with me’ feature?
This was a final market visit in Scotland of 2024 to St. Andrews and Pitlochry. I was also joined by my colleague, Nicola Cunningham, Area Manager, in St Andrews, where we met with existing partners. We visited Seaton House, a new development in town, which was great. The following day I visited the famous town of Pitlochry, which is nestled in the snowy Scottish Highlands. Here I met with local stakeholders, hotel partners and experienced new hotel openings.
What is it like working in the EG Edinburgh office?
Our office is in the New Town of Edinburgh, which has the most beautiful backdrop of the Edinburgh Old town. Its iconic skyline of old and new buildings, which has been built over the centuries, is probably the best Expedia Group office view anywhere, if you ask me! This photo is the actual view from our office balcony, looking towards Edinburgh Castle
We’re a small office, but have diverse teams from various departments, including our UK&I Director for Market Management, Media Solutions for UK&I, Process Solutions, Insights & Planning and Product Marketing, making it interesting. You really feel part of something bigger.
What are some of your interests outside of work?
My wife and our two kids, 5 and 8 years old, spend a lot of weekends travelling around Scotland with friends and exploring locally and further afield. Our favourite place to visit in Scotland is Loch Tay, where over the years we’ve spent many weekends and holidays. This is through a local youth organisation, where I have been a volunteer for around 19 years.
In January 2023 I joined the board of a local marine conservation charity, the Scottish Seabird Centre, which has been a fantastic way to continue giving back and support an important cause beyond the day job. Besides that, I enjoy photography and when the opportunity arises, I love a sunrise photograph at our local beach.
What is your proudest achievement at EG so far?
On the day of my first year anniversary with Expedia Group, I had been asked to speak at a tourism conference for a local destination management organisation. This was the first time since before the pandemic I had done public speaking to an audience of over 150 delegates. Throughout the preparation, and on the day, I had such great support from my peers, which made the experience a real pleasure. It felt great to speak directly to our partners about the benefits of working with Expedia Group.
Why would you recommend a career at Expedia Group?
I feel there are huge opportunities to grow as an individual and build your career in travel and technology here. Being at EG helps you understand the bigger picture in the industry, especially with the regular cross learning opportunities from teams across the globe, something I had never experienced previously, but find hugely rewarding. Expedia Group is one of the most inclusive and diverse organisations I have ever worked with in the UK, and they put people, and their needs, at the front of all conversations. Your team makes your business, if you have a good team, you have a good business!
