Career Check-in with Teresa Fisher-Galvez: Senior Marketing Manager
Teresa is currently part of the Supply Marketing, Strategic Accounts team, after taking on a great development opportunity to join the team via a secondment. After starting at Expedia Group in 2013, Teresa has gained great experience in marketing so far, and in this new role she now gets to learn from the team that manages communications with our largest hotel chains. Tell us about your experience at EG so far
I’ve been at Expedia Group for 11 years and have recently taken part in a secondment. My home team is the Travel Agent Affiliate Program or TAAP for short, which is EG’s booking platform designed for travel advisors, where I’m a Sr. Partner Marketing Specialist. I’m currently in a 6-month secondment with the Supply Marketing, Strategic Accounts team, as a Senior Marketing Manager.
The B2B Marketing Strategic Accounts team manages multi-channel marketing plans for EG’s largest lodging chains and transport suppliers. As part of the team, I look after 9 global hotel chains, working alongside their account managers, to craft partner-centric marketing plans that effectively drive business results, messaging at scale, and partner engagement.
What made you decide to apply to your current secondment?
I wanted to get exposure to how we do marketing in other parts of the business. I was very lucky to have found this opportunity in the supply marketing organization, supporting the team that manages communications to the largest hotel chains, which is a cornerstone for EG. I also wanted to learn more about the organization by taking a role in another team and then I’d be able to bring my home team expertise and a fresh perspective, as well as apply newly acquired skills.
What has the experience been like so far?
Even though I was coming from a marketing team within EG, the learning curve was a bit steep. Understanding the intricacies of managing marketing communications for hotel chain partners, alongside their account managers, and in collaboration with the partners themselves, was something completely new to me. Also, every hotel partner is unique, so even when we’re communicating at scale, we need to cater to the nuances and different business objectives of each, to help their properties succeed. Campaign planning and execution also differ to properly serve these diverse audiences, based on what they expect from us and how we can help them power global travel for everyone, everywhere, which is our mission at EG. This is the beauty of working at EG, you can find a world of learning opportunities without having to go far.
Even though as a team we are based in different parts of the world (Singapore, Geneva, Chicago and Seattle), my current manager and teammates have been amazing support and have been there for me every step of the way. Thanks to their readiness to help and kindness, my transition into the role was smooth and I’ve felt welcomed from the very beginning.
What is the most valuable skill you’ve developed so far?
I’ve been learning about account-based marketing (ABM), which is the B2B marketing methodology that my secondment team embraces to engage with the select group of hotel partners we work with. I already see areas of opportunity to implement the ABM approach when I get back to my permanent role and I’m looking forward to doing so.
