Career Conversations: Amit Choudhary on Returning and Leading with Purpose

Returning to Expedia Group (EG) after several years away has been both familiar and transformative for Vice President (VP), Engineering, Amit Choudhary. The travel industry has evolved dramatically since his last chapter here, in 2019, making this an exciting time to be part of the transformation. This time around, Amit has shifted from leading the B2B side of business travel to driving innovation in the B2C space, shaping seamless booking experiences for millions of travelers across our brands.

Read on to learn how the first 90 days back have been so far, and the type of leadership Amit will bring to his new team.

Tell us about your first 90 days back at EG.

It’s definitely a different space with new priorities. Last time I was at EG (between 2014-2019), I managed the B2B side of the business travel unit. This time, I’ve rejoined in the B2C space, which covers the entire traveler ecosystem.

In my first 90 days, I’ve focused on understanding the landscape and team structures. What I enjoy is the clarity and well-defined goals. Everything we do ties back to revenue or impact. We’re focused on top priorities that move the needle on market share and create a strong right to win as a global travel marketplace.

My teams focus on the booking side of the journey – from the moment a traveler selects a product to when everything is booked. That includes both the Ordering and the Reservation teams. It’s an exciting space because booking isn’t just about the transaction, there’s servicing involved: post-booking changes, cancellations, and itinerary updates. Our platforms manage all those touchpoints, a critical area for EG. The systems need to be stable, robust, and built with the traveler in mind.

What were the key reasons you decided to return to EG?

EG has always been people-centric, that’s a core value. I’ve worked across different sectors, but travel is the domain I wanted to come back to. It’s just so relatable, both personally and professionally. And when I met with the current leadership, it was clear that we’re approaching problems in new ways, tech-first and AI-first, investing in strengthening capabilities that allow us to raise the bar.

My previous time here was very memorable and some colleagues I worked with are still here, mixed with a great infusion of new talent, which is so energizing. This combined with seeing the new direction we’re heading toward, with the leadership team, gave me confidence that we have a real opportunity to win in the market.

There’s still a lot of disruption ahead. AI will play a huge role in travel. It’s central to people’s lives, where they go, how they plan, what they experience. There’s still friction, and we can improve that. If we move fast and focus on the right use cases, we can redefine the space. And what better way to do that than with a company I’ve always liked and admired?

What does good leadership look like to you?

I think it’s about autonomy. When I built teams here previously, we made sure decisions could be taken end-to-end. We had the support and ecosystem to own our space, not just execute decisions, which provides creative independence.

As for my own leadership style, I try to be hands-on, focused, and clear on priorities. I provide guidance and guardrails but also give people the freedom to operate. I hold everyone accountable, importantly including myself, to a high standard. We take care of the team, but we also push to go get what’s next.

Now that you’ve settled in, what are your latest priorities in the booking space?

We’re focused on opportunities in post-booking servicing, such as helping travellers during their journey when they need to cancel or change plans.

We’re bringing technology to the forefront, especially AI. We’re rethinking flows to make them frictionless. We need to be present wherever our travelers are, be that OpenAI, Perplexity, or other platforms. We want to play a key role in the AI space, which means modernising our platform and APIs to support agentic AI – a big shift.

Amit’s return highlights the momentum building across EG as we accelerate innovation and leadership globally. With deep expertise, a renewed sense of purpose, and a focus on empowering teams, Amit is helping shape the next chapter of seamless, tech-driven experiences for our travelers worldwide.
