But what does this all mean? One of our most recent Interns met with us to explain what their experience in a Marketing role at Expedia Group has been like.
Olivia Warner, Marketing Intern in Austin, TX, USA
Tell us about your team
Throughout my internship I worked as a Marketing Intern, part of the Performance Analytics team, formerly known as US Market Insights. This team has taught me the importance of having a great team culture and I am happy I got to experience the 10 weeks on this team!
Tell us about your role
My role as a Marketing Intern at EG consisted of multiple responsibilities and tasks throughout the week. Specifically as an intern we were each given a project to work on throughout the 10 weeks. For my role, I collaborated with different teams, set up meetings for my project as well as sat in team meetings to learn how a business operates. In addition, I also worked on technical skills and soft skills for my role to better my experience.
Tell us about the summer project you worked on
Throughout the summer I worked on my project, the Search and Search Conversion Tableau Dashboard and Playbook Project, alongside a fellow Marketing Intern. Specifically, my project entailed of myself building a self-serve Tableau dashboard that captured the US market and hotel LOB. The goal of this project was for teams to use this tool to readily pull search conversion data in order to make more data driven decisions based on destination level conversion rates. On the other end, my teammate created a playbook with use cases and decision trees based on this data from the dashboard in which teams can gain better insights and inspiration and I am grateful to have gotten to collaborate with colleagues all summer.
What skill sets do you think are required to be successful in your role?
Considering EG is a huge company, there are many diverse skill sets both technical and personal that are required to be successful. Personally, I think skills such as confidence, adaptability, and communication outweigh any technical skill for my internship. At the beginning of my internship, I faced a lot of learning curves and I learned that being able to communicate the areas of uncertainty is crucial in order to not feel lost (which is natural starting a new job). There are also a lot of changes and unknowns as an intern so being able to be confident and adapt to changes was huge for my success throughout my internship.
What technologies/tools do you work with?
At Expedia Group there are multiple tools I used throughout the week that allow me to be successful in my work. For my project, I used Tableau which is a data visualization tool. I also used Slack daily to communicate with my team or other stakeholders that played a role in my project. For my project, I utilized many different internal data sources to pull data from as well as PowerPoint to organize my ideas.
What’s your favorite thing about working at Expedia Group?
My favorite thing about working about Expedia Group was the company culture. Coming into tge internship, I was unsure how I would fit into a large company, but I was grateful to have worked with my team, mentor, and navigator to help me along the way. Having a support system allowed me to be myself throughout the internship, which I greatly appreciated. I also loved the hybrid work dynamic and the flexibility of EG and that was also been great throughout the summer.
