From São Paulo to London with Isadora Roland: Global Markets Senior Specialist

After joining Expedia Group in 2018, as an Intern in the São Paulo office, Isadora has had a truly life changing career path that has led her to relocate to London, UK.

During her time at EG, Isadora has discovered new skills in her role as a Global Markets Senior Specialist, where she focuses on transforming data into actionable insights for travelers.

Whilst at Expedia Group Isadora developed her passion for travel, starting with a trip to Mexico with an EG colleague. She then took this passion one step further by relocating to the UK and starting a new journey at our London office.

Read on to learn about Isadora’s experience at EG so far.

Isadora Roland
Senior Specialist, EMEA, Global Markets, Nordics

Applying to Expedia Group

In 2018, I was studying Statistics for my Bachelor’s degree at University of Campinas, a public university in the countryside of Brazil, where I am from. When it was time to find an internship, I discovered an opportunity at Expedia Group, which as a company immediately stood out to me. I felt a strong match with the culture, the office environment looked great, and there were roles available in Analytics and in Marketing. The office was based in São Paulo, approximately 100km from my hometown.

When I applied, I thought I had no chance at all but still, I gave it a try. To my delight, I was invited to an in-person selection day in São Paulo. When I was there, I realized many of the candidates had impressive international experiences like exchange programs and travel, which was very different from my background. I shared that the farthest place I had ever been was Goiás (a city in central-west Brazil) when I was a kid. I explained how much fun I had there and that it didn’t matter whether you were traveling to Goiás or Paris – every travel experience is special and amazing. I was so pleased to make it to the next step of interviews. I felt incredibly excited about the opportunity. The very next day, I received a call saying they wanted me to join the team! I couldn’t believe I made it, and that Expedia Group chose to give me a chance to be an intern.

My experience as an Intern

And then, the hardest phase began. Each day, I had to commute from my hometown to the EG office, back to college, and then home again – spending over five hours on the road, with high transportation costs. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but my mom and grandma were my pillars of strength, always encouraging me to keep going. EG also played a crucial role in supporting me, with my manager allowing flexible hours when I needed them. Looking back, the situation wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to persist for the chance to grow with the company.

My internship began with the SEM (Search Engine Marketing) team, where I had the opportunity to dive into the world of digital advertising and performance marketing, which manages a marketing channel that increases visibility on search engine results pages, such as Google. In this team, I learned how to use SQL and Tableau to optimize bidding strategies and specialized pages for certain keywords. It was a very technical team filled with people who taught me critical skills. My managers encouraged me to share ideas and included me in important processes. This built my confidence and helped me to build technical skills that I still use today.

Being a part of the Global Markets team

Later, I moved to the Global Markets team, which I’m still a part of. In this team, we take a 360-degree view of the market to drive business growth. My day-to-day involved transforming data into actionable insights to enhance the travel experience for Expedia users in Brazil and Mexico.

After a few months in this role, I was hired as a full-time employee upon graduating from college. It felt like a dream come true. I finished my degree, moved to São Paulo to be closer to the office, and in March 2022, I was promoted to a more senior role.

One of my highlights while working in the LATAM team was the Seasonal Project 2024, where I ensured LATAM’s readiness by aligning marketing channels and optimizing demand and supply. This effort led to double-digit growth, increased market share, and enhanced visibility for the region. It was a great opportunity.

The power of travel

Isadora and Rodrigo in Mexico

Back to 2022. I went on my first international trip to Mexico with my dear friend, Rodrigo, who is an Associate Market Manager who also works at Expedia Group, and was an intern at the time. We visited friends living there and had an incredible time exploring Cancun and Mexico City. After this trip, so much changed for me. I fell in love with Mexican culture and the joy of traveling internationally, discovering things I had no idea existed in another culture. And I came back home with a feeling that only my family’s trip to Goias brought me, so I wanted to travel more and explore the world.

In 2023, I visited London on my own. I wanted to experience being in Europe and visit the office for the first time. I scheduled one-on-ones with as many colleagues as possible and immediately fell in love with the city, the office, and the possibilities it held. I made it my goal to work in that office one day, and committed myself to making it happen.

Relocating to London

The opportunity to transfer from the LATAM team to the EMEA team came in 2024, and in September, my dream of living abroad came true, as I relocated to the Expedia Group London office.

Life here is fantastic, with top-notch amenities like advanced technologies, a library, multiple floors and kitchens, and monthly events. I’ve enjoyed the supportive teams, the opportunity to connect with so many talented and nice people, and gaining a more global view of the business compared to the regional focus I had before.

My life now is about seeking meaningful travel experiences and making them possible for others, just as they became possible for me. I also helped make my family’s travel dreams come true – in 2024, my grandma, at the age of 92, and my mom, at the age of 66, went on their first international trip together to Italy.

I want to inspire and help young people, just like the Isadora of 2018, to believe in themselves and chase their dreams. Because, trust me, dreams really do come true.
