Reflections from the Inclusive Careers Fair 2024

By Kelvin Tan

Hi friends! I’m Kelvin, a Recruiter at Expedia Group (EG) in sunny Singapore and the Pride Inclusion Business Group (IBG) Singapore Chapter Co-lead.

Kelvin Tan, Recruiter, Global Talent Acquisition, Singapore

Expedia Group’s commitment to Inclusion & Diversity

The Inclusive Careers Fair is more than just a job fair to me. It’s about us showing up as a company that really stands for inclusivity, including in its hiring processes, and to encourage other companies to do the same, to build a more inclusive culture across our industry.

More importantly, we want to show talent from underrepresented communities that there is support and allyship for them in the workplace, especially at EG. From inclusive benefits, to our ground-breaking Open Pathways Apprenticeship Program, which supports disability inclusion, we want talent to know that they can be themselves at EG.

Through partnering with our other IBGs, Ability Inclusion Movement (AIM), Pride (LGBTQIA+), and Women at Expedia Group Learning and Leading (WELL), I’m so proud to say that we represent different underrepresented groups in Singapore, and we can share about the different ways we’re helping to uplift these communities. Thanks to the many key activations at the Inclusive Careers Fair 2024, we could share our mission and values to a wide variety of people. Our EG-branded booth experience enabled us to network with attendees in an intimate and engaging way. We had close to 20 Expedian volunteers participate in the event throughout the day, reflecting the enthusiasm our people have to support EG, and our underrepresented groups.

How we showed up at the Inclusive Careers Fair 2024

To represent EG on the main stage, our Talent Acquisition Senior Manager, Marc Lester Yu spoke on the “Diversity is the Spice of Life” panel, alongside entertainer, Hossan Leong, Drag performer, Opera Tang and Paralympic medalist, Theresa Goh. The discussion surrounded the importance of embracing one’s differences and making it into a superpower, evident by Marc’s own career’s journey. Off stage, Marc was also part of the mentoring circle at the Inclusive Careers Fair. He shared about his experiences as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and about being a strong ally for the persons with disabilities community, relating his experiences to what the mentees were seeking to learn.

After the panel, attendees were invited to participate in the Personal Branding workshop hosted by our Employer Branding Senior Manager, Urshula Spemann. Besides sharing about what Expedia Group is doing to support our employees, we wanted to empower attendees at the event as well, and let them leave with new learnings about storytelling and personal branding they can incorporate into their everyday.

Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I resonate with how inclusive EG is, and I made it my mission to inspire other members of the community to show up and be visible so that they too can inspire others to bring their best and true selves at work.

It has been an honour of mine to launch our Well-traveled with Pride brand in Singapore at the Inclusive Careers Fair 2024, where we centred stories of the LGBTQIA+ community – reminding us that travel is for all. As we work to be the leader in powering global travel, we continue to make travel accessible for all, with underrepresented groups at the center. We are the creators of change within our industry.

And the Inclusive Careers Fair 2024 is not the only way we’re sharing about our support for the LGBTQIA+ community. In May 2024, we conducted an in-office panel and mentoring event, Pride Passport, where we hosted university students in our office so they could hear first-hand from leaders in Singapore about how they navigate the professional world as an LGBTQIA+ individual.

In and out of our workplaces, I’m excited for us to continue to foster allyship, and create connections, among different communities, to build a truly open world for all.
