After 15 years with Expedia Group, Satoru Arai decided it was time for a new chapter—one that would take him from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the vibrant city of Seattle. What sparked your relocation adventure?
Growing up in France for five years as a child left me with a lasting curiosity about the world beyond Japan. After 15 years with EG in Tokyo, I felt the pull to explore again—and I wanted my family to experience the richness of a new culture, just like I had.
How did you prepare for the big move?
I didn’t rush it. I eased into my new role while still in Tokyo, and my family and I took time to plan, research, and imagine what our new life in Seattle could look like. It was a team effort—and a thoughtful one.
What were the biggest challenges—and how did you grow from them?

Everything was new: the city, the job, the daily rhythm of life. But I reminded myself to stay grounded. I focused on the positives and trusted that no challenge would be too big to handle. That mindset made all the difference.
What new doors opened after the move?
Professionally, I stepped into a strategic role that gave me a fresh perspective on EG’s broader goals. Personally, living in the U.S. has opened my eyes to diversity in a whole new way—it’s been a powerful learning experience.
How did Expedia Group support your transition?
Expedia Group supported me in every way—financially, logistically, and emotionally. Most of the expenses for our move and visa applications were covered, and I was provided with expert services from immigration lawyers and relocation assistance companies. I cannot thank EG enough for that level of support. My previous manager encouraged me to take the leap, my new manager gave me the space to transition, and my Seattle-based colleagues made sure I felt welcomed from day one.
What helped you feel at home in Seattle?
Familiar faces made a big difference. I already had strong connections with colleagues in Seattle, which helped me settle in quickly. Plus, my family and I made an effort to connect with the local Japanese community before the move, which gave us a sense of comfort and belonging.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about relocating?
If an opportunity comes your way—take it! Don’t overthink it. Even if you don’t end up moving, the process of exploring the idea can lead to unexpected growth.
