Introduction to team

The Runtime Compute Platform (RCP) team are the platform engineers for Expedia Group: we build and run the company’s fully managed, centrally operated container runtime and service mesh on Kubernetes (EKS), providing a common, secure, and compliant runtime for services across all EG brands and environments.
We provision, secure, and operate Kubernetes clusters and workloads across all supported compute zones (AWS and existing data centers), covering deployment, connectivity, observability, and lifecycle management so product teams don’t have to own infrastructure complexity themselves.
As stewards of Expedia’s runtime ecosystem, our mission is to empower engineering teams to remove friction, improve reliability and performance, optimize cost, and deliver a first-class developer experience that accelerates how quickly ideas become customer-facing travel experiences at global scale.

In this role, you will:

  • Work closely with the team which designs, builds, and evolves reliable, scalable, and secure cloud‑native services on modern public cloud platforms (AWS preferred), including low‑level design (LLD), API design, and data modeling to support complex business capabilities across multiple domains.

  • Own end‑to‑end delivery of features and platform services from technical design and implementation through IaC‑based provisioning, CI/CD, deployment, monitoring, and operational support, ensuring high availability, performance, and cost efficiency improving code quality, test coverage, observability, and operational excellence by applying engineering best practices; designing automated build/test/release workflows; defining environment and promotion strategies; and contributing to shared frameworks, golden pipelines, and paved‑road tooling.

  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled and automation‑driven solutions that improve outcomes, including leveraging AI tools in day‑to‑day engineering.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 3+ years with a Master’s degree, or equivalent practical experience building and operating cloud‑native, production systems at scale.

  • Hands‑on experience with service‑oriented or microservices architectures, including containers and orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes/EKS or equivalent), service mesh/traffic management(Istio), Cloud agnostic tools(Karpenter, crossplane) & core networking(DNS)

  • Deep, practical experience with at least one major public cloud provider (AWS preferred), including multi‑AZ/region designs, IAM, secrets management, and enforcing security, compliance, and identity best practices.

  • Demonstrated ownership of IAAC, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing for complex services, including environment strategy (dev/stage/prod), promotion workflows, and change management practices.

  • Demonstrated end‑to‑end ownership of multiple production services or platforms (4+ is typical), including design, deployment, on‑call participation, incident response, observability, performance tuning, and cost optimization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background operating large‑scale, highly available distributed systems, including leading incident response (incident command), performing root cause analysis, and driving sustainable post‑incident improvements (RCA, corrective and preventive actions).

  • Track record of driving engineering improvements such as latency reduction, resiliency and availability gains, cost optimization (FinOps), and developer productivity through automation, standardization, and platform capabilities.

  • Hands‑on application of reliability and resilience patterns (circuit breakers, backoff and retry, bulkheads, timeouts) and, where appropriate, chaos or continuity testing to validate system behavior under failure. Experience defining and monitoring SLIs/SLOs, implementing metrics/logs/traces, and using dashboards and alerts to run services in production.

  • Familiarity with AI‑driven systems, tools, and workflows, with the ability to safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled capabilities within services and platforms to improve customer and business outcomes.

  • Experience providing technical leadership within a team or platform area, acting as a technical lead on complex, high‑risk projects; defining technical direction and standards for DevOps/platform/cloud practices; and influencing design and implementation across services and teams.

  • Strong track record of cross‑team collaboration and influence, partnering with application, security, networking, data, and FinOps stakeholders to design and deliver end‑to‑end solutions, improve policies and tooling, and standardize best practices.

  • History of mentoring and raising the engineering bar, being trusted as a reviewer for high‑risk or foundational changes, and contributing to shared documentation, patterns, and communities of practice.
