About the Team

Expedia Group's Reservations team owns the platform that processes and manages bookings across every Expedia point of sale globally. This is the system that turns a traveler's intent into a confirmed reservation and keeps that reservation accurate, accessible, and actionable throughout the trip lifecycle.

The platform runs on a modern microservices architecture in AWS. It handles millions of booking transactions daily with high availability and low latency. We are in the middle of a significant architecture evolution, making the reservation platform more flexible for product servicing while maintaining the performance and reliability bar our travelers and partners depend on.

This is infrastructure that matters. When it works well, travelers trust Expedia with their plans. When it doesn't, they feel it immediately.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer who will own critical backend systems end to end. You will design, build, and operate services that handle real money, real travelers, and real-time constraints. You will make technical decisions that affect the reliability and extensibility of a platform serving hundreds of millions of users.

You will not be handed a spec and asked to implement it. You will identify the right problems to solve, propose the architecture, drive alignment with stakeholders, make trade-offs explicit, and deliver. You will own the operational health of what you build. You will mentor engineers around you and raise the engineering bar for the team through code reviews, design reviews, and technical leadership in ambiguous situations.

This role requires someone who thinks in systems, not features. Someone who asks "what breaks at 10x scale" before writing the first line. Someone who treats operational excellence as a first-class engineering concern, not an afterthought.

What You Will Own

You will design and deliver backend services and APIs that are scalable, resilient, and maintainable. You will drive technical decisions on architecture, data modeling, and system boundaries in a complex multi-service environment. You will identify inefficiencies, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks in existing systems and fix them without being asked. You will define and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, and incident response. You will participate in on-call rotations and treat production issues with the urgency they deserve. You will mentor other engineers, unblock them technically, and help them grow. You will integrate AI/ML capabilities into backend services where they create real product value, with the engineering discipline to do so safely.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience. 5+ years of professional software development experience.

Preferred Expertise

Demonstrated track record of designing, building, and maintaining backend services and APIs at scale in production. Strong foundation in system design, data modeling, and writing secure, maintainable code. Proven ability to own and deliver end-to-end technical solutions in distributed, multi-service environments without close supervision.

Deep expertise in architecting, scaling, and operating distributed backend systems under real production load. Experience integrating AI/ML features into backend services with appropriate guardrails, evaluation, and observability. Track record of driving operational excellence, including monitoring, alerting, SLAs, and incident management. History of influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team through design documents, architecture reviews, or cross-team initiatives. Demonstrated ability to apply data-driven reasoning to engineering decisions, including cost optimization, performance trade-offs, and capacity planning.
