The Team

Are you excited to build new technologies instrumental in bringing Expedia Group's evolving brands to life? Come build the future of travel with us! The Search and Recommendations Experience team is looking for curious, empathetic, and creative problem solvers with a growth mindset. We are a team of travel-loving makers, building a cutting-edge platform using the latest technologies — and we are looking for someone who wants to own hard, high-impact UX challenges at scale.

Our team shapes how millions of travellers discover, search, and engage with travel products across all of Expedia Group's brands. As a UX Engineer III, you will sit at the intersection of design, product, and engineering, driving the evolution of our search and recommendations experience from concept through production. You will bring strong technical leadership, a data-informed design sensibility, and the ability to raise the bar for quality across a distributed, cross-functional team.

As a senior member of the team, you will lead technical design, drive cross-team alignment, mentor peers, and ship features that directly impact the way customers start and shape their travel journey.

In This Role, You Will

  • Lead the design, prototyping, and implementation of high-quality user experiences for search entry, results, and recommendations surfaces, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and performance across all Expedia Group brands.

  • Drive end-to-end technical ownership of complex UX features: from requirements gathering and system design (including API contracts, data modelling, and low-level UI architecture) through to production delivery and operational stability.

  • Build, evolve, and advocate for reusable UI libraries, design-system-aligned components, and shared frontend tooling that powers multiple product teams and brands at scale, driving standardisation and fungibility across the Search and Recommendations platform.

  • Champion a data-driven approach by instrumenting UX-related signals (engagement, conversion, performance, accessibility metrics) and translating A/B test results and experimentation findings into actionable product and engineering improvements.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, UX designers, backend engineers, and platform teams to translate complex user and business requirements into elegant, performant, and maintainable frontend solutions.

  • Define and uphold engineering excellence standards, including robust cross-browser and cross-device behaviour, accessibility compliance, CI/CD practices, automated testing, monitoring, and incident response for high-traffic search experiences.

  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions within the UX engineering workflow, including AI-assisted content, personalisation, and experimentation capabilities — applying these in a controlled, observable, and measurable way.

  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, technical design discussions, and knowledge sharing, fostering a culture of continuous learning and craft.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience.

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience as a UX Engineer, Frontend Engineer, or similar role building and owning production web experiences at scale.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with modern web technologies (React, Node.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, component-based frameworks) and proven ability to design and implement robust, maintainable UI system architectures, including API design and data modelling for frontend integrations.

  • Experience leading end-to-end delivery of complex user-facing features in cross-functional product teams (engineering, product, design), with accountability for quality, performance, and operational stability.

  • Track record of applying qualitative and quantitative data — including experimentation, A/B testing, and UX performance metrics — to drive design and implementation decisions.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to or evolve shared component libraries, design systems, or multi-tenant UI platforms used by multiple product teams or brands.

  • Enthusiasm for responsible use of AI-powered tools (e.g., code assistants, test generators, documentation helpers) to accelerate delivery, with strong engineering judgment to review, refine, and validate AI-generated outputs.

  • Commitment to ethical AI use, including data privacy, security considerations, and avoiding over-reliance on AI-generated outputs without appropriate validation and testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and leading the evolution of shared UX platforms, design systems, or multi-tenant component libraries used at significant scale across multiple brands or product surfaces.

  • Proven technical leadership in cross-functional squads: driving architecture discussions, mentoring peers, and influencing technical strategy for search, discovery, or growth-oriented frontend experiences.

  • Track record of owning and improving frontend performance, accessibility, reliability, and operational excellence for high-traffic web properties, including defining and enforcing Core Web Vitals, testing strategies, and observability practices.

  • Hands-on experience safely integrating and operating AI/ML-enabled solutions to improve UX outcomes — such as AI-assisted content generation, personalisation engines, or intelligent recommendations — while maintaining control, observability, and user trust.

  • Experience applying LLMs or predictive models to generate, adapt, or personalise search and recommendation experiences in a measurable and responsible way.

  • Familiarity with search UX patterns, typeahead/autocomplete systems, recommendation surfaces, or similar discovery-focused experiences in a high-traffic consumer product context.
