Principal User Experience Designer

The Expedia Group Platform Design team explores and builds next-generation product and service experiences that advance our brand, evolve our technology, and bring user-centered innovation to the travel industry.
The Principal User Experience Designer works on a multidisciplinary team, driving discovery, and experience strategy tracks for larger problem spaces for the Platform Experience Design team and across Expedia Group. Typically collaborating with Product Managers, Engineers, Designers, Researchers, Analysts, and Strategists, this person takes a systemic view to identify challenges, uncover new experiences and business opportunities, and apply a holistic perspective. As part of this work, the Principal will define, lead, and drive work through the Platform Experience Design team endeavors. They establish and evangelize the platform along with new methods for approaching innovation and crafting new experiences. They thrive at pushing the boundaries of what is possible at the intersection of data, design, and human behavior, resulting in new interfaces enabled by our travel platform.
What you’ll do
Push on our systems and experiences to uncover opportunities for connection, simplification, and innovation and craft compelling customer experience visions and strategies at the platform level by putting together pieces from across the organization
Communicate ideas as thoughtful, holistic experiences that hold the design organization accountable to a high-quality bar
Strategically build and maintain a network of key contacts in the company who can partner with us to achieve results
Lead efforts with key leadership partners and contribute domain expertise to make sure the right groups are talking and collaborating while you drive, guide, and contribute to major evolutions of experience strategy and capabilities
Accelerate the creation and delivery of new, next-generation travel platform products, services, and end-to-end experiences, building differentiated work that advances our brand, and charts the course for our industry
Develop, drive, and teach standard methodologies for problem framing work and synthesis of customer and business insights
Guides the definition of foundational layers of the system and architects enterprise-quality components, foundational utilities, tools, and highly functional proofs-of-concept
Practice, drive and teach exemplary visual and interaction design practice and hold the design team accountable to deliver high-quality experiences—pushing to define and evolve the design language for the future, ensuring elevated standards and a beautiful aesthetic
Provide mentorship and leadership, especially when evaluating the impacts of a solution to ensure linkages between structure, process, and technology
Continuously experiment with new tools and design approaches to help advance the work and organization
Who you are:
Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience, or related Design field; or equivalent related professional experience
5+ years of professional experience in Senior or Lead-level design roles working with product teams and leading UX designers on software interfaces
Understands methods used in human-centered design, user experience design, research, and content strategy processes and practices to a level that enables strong teamwork with peers
History of working in complex product spaces and developing cohesive, compelling strategic visions for experience, product, and service challenges
Demonstrates exceptionally strong skills in visual design and prototyping of sophisticated interfaces for app, web, and other UI
Proven experience working directly with engineering and data science partners to craft advanced, intelligent interfaces that influence the creation of new capabilities
Advanced skills in information architecture and designing experiences or features for large platforms
Passionate about uncovering and sharing new advancements in design, emerging technology, AI, and/or new customer behavior
A futurist and curious nature — always looking at what’s next and eager to share out with others
