Career Check-in with Ingy El Hefnawy: Collections Lead

Ingy joined Expedia Group in 2018, and works in the EG Amsterdam, Netherlands, office as a Collections Lead. In her role, Ingy gets to connect with many teams, as well as learn a huge amount about the business side of EG, and a lot of our products. The role also brings with it an opportunity to build processes, and train colleagues, something Ingy has developed a real passion for.

The brand-new EG Amsterdam office is in a great location, with breath taking views of the city’s famous canals. With a great mixture of nationalities, there is a great office culture and a supportive environment that empowers employees to do their best work. Learn more about Ingy’s experience in Amsterdam, below.

Ingy El Hefnawy, Collections Lead, Amsterdam, Netherlands

I am a Collections Lead in the Partner Payment Operations division. I am based out of the Amsterdam office and I have been with Expedia Group for almost 7 years.

My team is responsible for the collection and credit management for all the partner payments operations, so we connect with other partner payment operations team like billing, accounts receivable and central support. We also connect with account management for the strategic and non-strategic partners. We handle lots of products, ranging from hotel compensation invoices, to advertising campaign invoices for hotels, airlines, car rentals and even invoices for international tourism boards.

In my role, I provide support across team projects related to system and process improvements as well as transition and implementation. I act as my team trainer for internal processes on the products I have mentioned above. I have discovered in my journey at EG that I am passionate about supporting people and creating alignment between different teams through building processes, and I really enjoy that I can do this in my role.

Although the EG Amsterdam office is fairly small, it is a very international office, so we have nationalities from all over the globe. I love the vibe and culture, it is very warm and very inclusive. I also like that it is in the center of Amsterdam, with breath taking canal views, and it’s easy to reach by bike or public transport. On my way to the office, I always see lots of tourist taking pictures with on the iconic Amsterdam canals, which always brings be back to, and reminds me of, our mission to power global travel for everyone, everywhere.

We keep busy in the office, here are some of the recent events and activities that have taken place:

  • Potluck Picnic: colleagues across the office met in Vondelpark for a summer picnic, with each person bringing a different food option.
  • Own Your Dreams Program Management workshop: volunteers at Expedia Group delivered a session explaining more about program management, and their career journeys at EG so far.
  • Q&A with Chief Marketing Officer Jochen Koedijk: current CMO of Expedia Group, joined the Amsterdam office for an informal Q&A with the team.

I have some hobbies like practicing Yin Yoga and Reformer Pilates. I also practice playing Japanese drums and I performed in public for the first time in 2022 playing at the Japanese festival in Amstelveen, Netherlands. I like also to go cycling in the woods as it centers my focus and attention. Fun Fact: I learned to ride a bike at the age of 35, as a child I was always afraid, but when I moved in Amsterdam, I thought I will not live in a city where bicycles are the first medium of transportation, and not be able to ride.

EG culture is very accepting and inclusive. Everyone feels included and heard no matter what culture, or group, they belong to. Our culture encourages transparency and feedback all the time to enhance existing processes.

There is great emphasis on the employee’s mental health and work life balance through programs provided to the employees, globally. For example, as a mother I was able to return to work thanks to the flexible working schedule available, and this is something I really appreciated throughout my career in EG.

Innovation is at the core of what we do in EG, employees are always supported and encouraged to submit their travel related innovative ideas through companywide hackathons.

Finally, I also love how EG is committed to social responsibility through lots of programs like Benevity and Month of Caring (MOC), which is conducted in EG offices all over the world each September. Here are some of the MOC activities in our Amsterdam office:

  • “Plastic Fishing” with Plastic Whale – colleagues joined together on a canal boat to search for plastic to make the Amsterdam canals cleaner
  • Cooking Lunch for the Homeless and Undocumented – across various days, the team cooked meals for the homeless people in the city

My proudest achievement is being elected as the Partnerships Chair on the Women in Expedia Learning and Leading (WELL) board, which is one of our internal Inclusion Business Groups (IBGs). I am so passionate about supporting women in general, and in the workplace. My position on the WELL board helps put this passion into action. I also feel very supported by EG as our company goal is to reach 50:50 representation between men and women across all levels of the organization.
