Being a member of Pride at Expedia Group with Marc Lester Yu

In celebration of Pride in the month of June, we caught up with Talent Acquisition Senior Manager, Marc Lester Yu, who is based out of our Singapore office, to find out what it means to be an inclusive leader in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, and how Expedia Group (EG) cultivates an inclusive and diverse culture from within.

Pride at Expedia Group fosters a positive environment for LGBTQIA+ employees and allies through support, development, engagement and advocacy. The board serves as an expert advisor for our internal and external partners.

I pay close attention to our inclusive hiring practices, ensuring that our teams, partners, and stakeholders are fully committed to our principle of cultivating an open culture where every voice matters, and everyone belongs.

At EG, we have a very active Inclusion Business Groups (IBG) community, and I passionately contribute to activities within the Pride Singapore IBG. Recently, I had the privilege of mentoring some LGBTQIA+ youth during their visit to the Singapore office, which was an incredibly fulfilling experience not just for them, but for me as well.

With a personal connection to disability and, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I’m committed to allyship, particularly towards people with disabilities. This year, I spearheaded the inaugural Open Pathways Apprenticeship program pilot in Singapore – a partnership with Hilton that facilitates entry into the Travel Tech workforce for people with disabilities.

A memorable moment was discovering several queer leaders within the organization who were not only part of the LGBTQIA+ community but also Asian. Seeing leaders who I could relate to was profound. It’s empowering to see them champion inclusion by speaking at public events, inspiring individuals from underrepresented communities like me. It shows us that it’s possible to aspire and achieve positions of leadership, lean in, take a seat at the table, and drive change.

Last year, we sponsored the Inclusive Careers Fair in Singapore – dedicated to fostering inclusion, equity, belonging, and diversity. Michael Dykes, our Vice President of Market Management for APAC, and a proud champion of our Pride Inclusion Business Group, was a panelist for the segment “Is Diversity and Inclusion a Double-Edged Sword,” where he spoke about why diversity and inclusion is not only good for people but also good for business.

From a recruiting perspective, we actively review and ensure our practices are inclusive, making conscious efforts to include underrepresented groups when sourcing and engaging talent. We strive to remove barriers by making our processes more inclusive and accessible. We also highlight our inclusive benefits, so candidates know they’ll be supported when they join us. To me, belonging means being your best self at work, where your identity is not just accepted but celebrated, and that has been true for me here at EG.

I’m excited about the continued journey of self-discovery and personal growth that comes with embracing my identity and being part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Each step I take in my Pride journey brings new experiences, connections, and opportunities to learn from others’ stories. Our initiatives demonstrate our commitment to creating safe and inclusive experiences for travelers and employees alike. I’m eager to contribute to projects and programs that further support and uplift our travelers and employees from underrepresented groups.

I am also thrilled to be a panelist at this year’s Inclusive Careers Fair, speaking on the segment “Diversity Is the Spice of Life.” This panel features individuals from underrepresented segments that the fair aims to serve. My fellow panelists and I will share personal stories of diversity, inclusion, and resilience. Attendees will learn how we can support these communities and show up as allies for each other. By advocating for inclusivity and sharing my experiences, I hope to encourage others to embrace their authentic selves and embark on their own journeys with pride.

Why do you think people should consider working at EG?

Being able to express and share key parts of your identity with colleagues allows you to form authentic and genuine relationships. At EG your identity isn’t just accepted; it is celebrated. It’s a place where you can be your authentic self and be surrounded by people who value inclusivity and diversity. EG creates spaces where people can form genuine relationships and feel a deep sense of belonging.
