Meet Kiara Wilson, an Associate Market Manager based in Austin, Texas. After connecting with Expedia Group at our 2023 “Black & Well-Traveled” networking event during AfroTech, Kiara joined our team in March 2024. When she’s not building strong relationships with our lodging partners, Kiara’s passions include immersing herself in different cultures through travel, sharing her love for hip-hop dance, and indulging in Austin’s vibrant food scene.

Let’s unpack how her experience at last year’s event shaped her career and her advice for this year’s attendees.

How would you describe your experience at our 2023 AfroTech networking event?

Overall, my experience was really welcoming and exciting! What immediately stood out to me was the fact that the event was hosted in RichesArt Gallery, a Black-owned art gallery in Austin that’s important to the community. It was also refreshing to overhear conversations about first-time travel experiences and to hear from a panel of inspiring speakers who shared insights around life at Expedia Group and their global adventures. The delicious Jamaican food, live painter, DJ, and 360 photo booth was an added bonus! 

From attending the event, I was inspired by Expedia Group’s dedication to showcasing diverse cultures and making travel accessible for all. It was clear to me that they’re passionate about breaking down barriers and strengthening connections. 

How did attending our 2023 AfroTech networking event impact your career journey? 

I attended the networking event primarily out of excitement to connect with other Black people in tech and learn more about the travel technology industry. Little did I know, those conversations would have a significant impact on my career. Networking with the Expedia Group team sparked a connection that ultimately led to a job offer and a new chapter in my professional life.

What advice would you give to someone considering attending our AfroTech networking event? 

I’d highly recommend attending the AfroTech networking event! To make the most of your time, fully immerse yourself in the experience. Be authentic, share your passions, and don’t hesitate to strike up conversations with Expedians and fellow attendees. Building genuine connections can open doors to new opportunities like it did for me!
