Introducing EG’s Sustainability Focused Employee Resource Group

SAGE (Sustainable & Green at Expedia Group) is a community-based resource group made up of like-minded colleagues, united by a shared passion for building a greener planet, as a company and as individuals.

Hear more from Angie Caldeira, Content Strategist and Global Communications Chair for SAGE.

How did you get involved with SAGE at Expedia Group?

I got involved with SAGE about 6 months after I first joined EG. I did not have any teammates based in Chicago, so I wanted to find a community where I could build relationships and contribute. The Chicago chapter was looking for support during Earth Month in April 2022. I always had a passion for the environment, so I jumped in to help.

Shortly after that, I was invited to become a co-lead, which I have been doing ever since. Then at the end of 2025, there were a few vacancies on the SAGE global board. I applied and was selected as the Global Communications Chair!

What is SAGE’s mission?

Our mission is to build a community of empowered employees to execute local initiatives and support the implementation of EG’s global sustainability strategy.

How big is the SAGE community across Expedia Group?

As of June 2026, SAGE has 936 members with 39 chapters across 20 countries across all regions. We’re continuing to grow and seek representation in all 74 Expedia Group offices.

What is SAGE most proud of this year?

There is so much to be proud of this year, but what really stands out is how much we have grown engagement and interest across SAGE. Last year, employee participation was low. We had only 10 active chapters, our Slack channels were mostly quiet, and sustainability efforts saw less visibility as teams navigated shifting priorities and organizational changes.

This year looks very different. For Earth Month alone, we expanded to 34 active chapters and hosted 42 events worldwide, with 39 new leads, co-leads, and allies stepping into roles. We more than doubled our engagement score and grew membership by 7.5 percent in just one month.

The energy showed up in meaningful ways, from a global discussion with our VP of Global Social Impact and Sustainability, Aditi Mohapatra, and longtime partner Wildlife Conservation Society on nature positive tourism, to local initiatives across our offices. In New York City, employees created cat toys and pet blankets using recycled materials. In Bali, a composting vendor helped educate teams on how to bring composting practices into their office. Stockholm hosted a donation drive to give pre-loved items a second home, while many other offices organized sustainable meals, gardening and plant activities, and educational workshops. Together, this momentum reflects a community that is growing, engaged, and ready to make a lasting impact.

What are SAGE’s goals for the rest of 2026 and beyond?

We’re excited to keep empowering our chapter leads to drive meaningful impact in their local communities. This includes refreshing our “Climate Change and the Future of Travel” Workday training for all employees, increasing engagement with EG’s sustainability initiatives and Global Social Impact & Sustainability team, and creating space for thoughtful conversations on the topics that matter most to our members, including emerging issues like the environmental impact of AI. We’re also working toward securing a C-suite executive sponsor to help elevate and support this work across the organization.

How can people outside of the SAGE community at Expedia Group be an ally to SAGE?

Well first, we’d love for you to join our community! And second, stay open to learning. We encourage everyone to join SAGE or attend a local chapter event, take part in moments like Earth Month and Month of Caring, and engage with the conversations and resources shared in our Slack channel.

SAGE is designed to be a supportive, non-judgmental space. We know not all sustainable choices are accessible to everyone, and that’s okay. There is no eco-shaming here. We are all on our own journey, and what matters most is showing up with curiosity and a willingness to grow. By continuing to learn, sharing SAGE with others, and making more conscious decisions when possible, employees can help build a culture that is more thoughtful about impact and more connected to the communities around us.

For Earth Month, SAGE Seattle and the Global Social Impact & Sustainability team hosted a beach cleanup along Elliott Bay outside the EG headquarters.
