From Japan to Malaysia: Building Careers Without Borders
For our Japanese Expedians in Selangor, Malaysia, they have the opportunity to do exactly that. From helping hotel partners grow their businesses to collaborating with colleagues from around the world, these Partner Growth & Agility teammates support travelers and partners across Japan while gaining international experience in one of Asia’s most diverse and vibrant countries.
We spoke with Mai, Riko and Yu about their career journeys, life in Malaysia, and the experiences that have shaped them along the way.

What attracted you to a career in Malaysia?
Mai: I had always been interested in Expedia Group because of its strong presence and impact in the travel industry. At the time, I was working in South Korea and looking for opportunities abroad when a recruiter introduced me to the role in Malaysia.
Even though I had never visited Malaysia before, it was already a destination I was curious about. Since relocating, it has been exactly what I hoped it would be — warm, welcoming, and full of opportunities to meet people from all over the world while experiencing local culture and amazing food.
Riko: Malaysia was already a meaningful place to me. I moved here after high school to study International Business, and over time it became more than just a place for my education. It became a place where I grew as a person, became more independent, and learned how to adapt to a different culture and environment. Joining Expedia Group in Malaysia felt like the right combination of career opportunity and personal growth.
What do you enjoy most about your role now?
Yu: Our primary goal is to support our hotel partners’ sales strategies and ultimately enhance the travel experience for our guests. Although we don’t typically interact directly with travelers, we always keep in mind the impact our work has on them.
Travel provides moments of joy that are indispensable to life. If I can play even a small part in creating those experiences for others, that is enough to make my work rewarding.
Mai: What I find most rewarding is being able to make a tangible impact through quick outreach and problem-solving. Sometimes we’re able to spot and resolve issues that hotel partners may not have noticed themselves, and it’s rewarding to see those changes lead to better performance.
What is life in Malaysia like?
Riko: Living in Malaysia has been both exciting and eye-opening. Being surrounded by different cultures, languages, food, and ways of thinking makes everyday life very enriching. It has helped me become more independent, adaptable, and open-minded.
Mai: Malaysia is a very comfortable place to live. The lifestyle feels vibrant and welcoming, and I’ve found it easy to adapt and feel at home here. There are also many Japanese restaurants and easy access to Japanese products, so I can still enjoy familiar parts of home whenever I want.
What have you learned from working in a multicultural environment?
Mai: Working with people from different nationalities, communication styles, and perspectives has taught me to be more adaptable, empathetic, and collaborative. It has shown me that there are many effective ways to build trust, solve problems, and achieve results.
Yu: My friends and colleagues in Malaysia often tell me, ‘Life is short. We don’t need to rush.’ As a Japanese person, that perspective was very different from what I was used to. Living in Malaysia has taught me that there are many ways to approach life and work. It has helped me appreciate different cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career abroad?
Mai: Stepping away from the place and environment you’re used to takes courage, but once you take that first step, the rewards can be far greater than you imagine.
Riko: Living and working abroad has helped me grow professionally and personally. If you’re curious about experiencing a global environment and learning from people with different perspectives, Malaysia offers a great opportunity to do both.

マレーシアでのキャリアに魅力を感じた理由は何ですか ?
マイ : Expedia Group は旅行業界で強い存在感と影響力を持っているため、以前からずっと興味を持っていました。当時、私は韓国で働いていて、海外での就職先を探していたのですが、そのときマレーシアでのこの仕事を紹介されたのです。
マレーシアには一度も行ったことがありませんでしたが、すでに興味のある場所でした。引っ越して以来、期待どおりの生活をしています。気候は温暖で、皆さんも歓迎してくれました。地元の文化や素晴らしい料理を楽しみながら、世界中の人々と出会う機会にあふれています。
リコ : マレーシアは、私にとってすでに特別な場所でした。高校卒業後に国際ビジネスを学ぶために移住してきましたが、いつの間にか単なる学びの場以上の国になっていました。人間として成長し、さらに自立し、異なる文化や環境に適応する方法を学んだ場所となったのです。マレーシアの Expedia Group に入社するのは、キャリアの向上機会と自己成長のバランスの取れた選択だと感じました。
現在の仕事の中で、最もやりがいを感じていることは何ですか ?
ユウ : 私たちの主な目標は、パートナー施設の販売戦略を支援し、ひいてはお客様の旅行体験をより充実させることです。旅行者の方々と直接関わることはほぼありませんが、私たちの仕事が旅行者の方々に与える影響については、常に心に留めています。
旅は、人生に欠かせない喜びをもたらします。ほんのわずかでも、人にそのような体験を提供するのに役立てるなら、それが私のやりがいです。
マイ : 一番のやりがいは、迅速な対応と問題解決を通じて、目に見える成果を上げられることです。ときには、パートナー施設の担当者様自身も気づいていなかった問題点を見つけ出し、解決できることもあります。そうした改善が業績向上につながるのを見るのは、とてもうれしいです。
マレーシアでの生活はいかがですか ?
リコ : マレーシアでの生活は、刺激的で、多くの気づきを与えてくれました。さまざまな文化や、言語、食べ物、考え方に囲まれていると、日々の生活がとても充実します。そのおかげで、より自立し、柔軟になり、広い視野を持てるようになりました。
マイ : マレーシアはとても住みやすいです。活気に満ちていつつも、温かく迎え入れてくれる雰囲気で、すぐに自分の家のように馴染むことができました。和風料理店も多く、日本の製品も手軽に手に入るので、好きな時に懐かしい雰囲気を楽しむことができます。
多文化環境での仕事を通じて、どのようなことを学びましたか ?
マイ : さまざまな国籍や、コミュニケーションスタイル、視点を持つ人々と働くうちに、より柔軟な対応力や、共感の力、協力する姿勢を身につけることができました。信頼を築き、問題を解決し、成果を上げるための効果的な方法はたくさんあると知りました。
ユウ : マレーシアの友人や同僚からよく言われるのが、「人生は短い。急ぐ必要はないよ」という言葉です。日本人として慣れ親しんでいた考え方とは大きく違いました。マレーシアでの生活を通じて、人生や仕事に対する向き合い方にはさまざまなものがあると学びました。この考え方は、さまざまな文化や、視点、考え方を理解するのに役立ちました。
海外でのキャリアを考えている人に、どのようなアドバイスを贈りますか ?
マイ : 慣れ親しんだ場所や環境から一歩踏み出すには勇気が必要ですが、その第一歩を踏み出せば、想像以上に大きな成果が得られるかもしれません。
リコ : 海外での生活と仕事は、私を仕事面でも人間的にも成長させてくれました。グローバルな環境を体験し、さまざまな視点を持つ人々から学びたいなら、マレーシアはその両方を実現する絶好の機会を提供してくれます。
