Principal Developer Relations Engineer
Introduction to Team:
Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.
At Expedia Group, the Developer Experience team is building the platform foundation that powers the next generation of intelligent, AI-driven applications. Our goal is to make it simple for developers to create, deploy, and scale solutions that transform travel through intelligence and automation. We combine modern developer tooling, robust frameworks, and a connected community to enable innovation across thousands of engineers. If you’re passionate about AI, platform engineering, and elevating developer success, this is the team to do your best work.
As a Principal Developer Relations Engineer, you will lead Expedia’s global developer advocacy and enablement strategy. Your focus will begin with AI adoption and literacy, but your broader charter is to champion what matters most to developers—ensuring they have the right tools, automation, and knowledge to deliver impact. You’ll serve as the connector between the Developer Experience organization, engineering teams, and the broader developer ecosystem, driving adoption of internal platforms and shaping the future of how developers build at Expedia.
In this role, you will:
Educate and Inspire Through Content: Create and curate high-quality technical content—blog posts, videos, live sessions, and documentation—that simplify complex topics. Lead Expedia’s developer enablement content strategy by setting the standard for clarity and usefulness. Your work will cover foundational engineering topics, applied AI patterns, and emerging developer workflows.
Build Golden Paths and Reference Architectures: Develop and maintain inner-source examples, reference architectures, and starter kits that guide teams through best practices for adopting Expedia’s internal tools and AI technologies. Build frameworks that improve discoverability and developer productivity across multiple platforms.
Grow and Support the Developer Community: Engage with developers across internal channels such as Slack, Backstage.io, Jira, confluence, etc. Build scalable engagement models—including internal advocacy programs, partner collaborations, and inner-source initiatives—that foster a welcoming and connected developer environment. Act as an advocate for internal adoption of Expedia’s developer ecosystem and platforms.
Be the Voice of Developers: Gather insights and feedback from developers and use them to influence Expedia’s roadmap for developer tooling, automation, and AI experiences. Partner with engineering and product leadership to ensure developer needs directly inform priorities and long-term strategy.
Represent and Evangelize Globally: Lead workshops, demos, and technical sessions that accelerate adoption of Expedia’s developer tools and platforms. Represent Developer Experience at global company events, leadership forums, and conferences, helping internal teams understand and embrace emerging technologies.
Drive Innovation and Strategic Influence: Stay current with the rapidly evolving developer and AI ecosystem. Experiment with new AI frameworks, developer tools, and automation technologies. Translate insights into actionable recommendations for Expedia’s developer platforms and productivity roadmap.
Lead and Mentor: Guide and mentor developer advocates and engineers, helping build a culture of enablement and storytelling across the organization. Lead cross-functional initiatives that strengthen Expedia’s developer ecosystem, from onboarding and enablement to platform adoption.
Minimum Qualifications:
8+ years of professional experience in software development; with at least 3–4 years in a developer-facing or enablement leadership role (Developer Relations, Developer Advocacy, Developer Productivity, or similar)
Experience leading developer relations or technical evangelism efforts at scale in enterprise or platform environments
Proficiency with the modern AI and developer tool stack, including but not limited to: AI Coding Assistants: GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode, or similar; Spec-Driven Development: OpenAPI, Pydantic, JSON Schema, or other structured output design tools; LLM APIs & Frameworks: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, LlamaIndex, LangChain
Strong background in developer platform or enablement technologies, such as CI/CD pipelines, internal developer portals, onboarding frameworks, and workflow automation
Exceptional communication skills, capable of distilling deep technical topics into practical guidance for engineering audiences
Proven experience building and scaling developer communities or enablement programs that drive measurable adoption and impact
Preferred Qualifications:
Platform engineering experience, including exposure to CI/CD, internal developer portals, and workflow orchestration
Experience building or integrating native applications, SDKs, or developer toolchains
Background in MLOps, AI model optimization, or developer productivity engineering
Visible presence in the AI or developer community (e.g., open-source contributions, speaking engagements, technical writing)
Familiarity with multimodal AI systems (text, image, or audio)
Willingness to travel occasionally for conferences, workshops, and developer events (approx. 10–20%)
