Career Check-in with Dominique Ross: Software Development Engineer
Meet Dominique Ross, a Software Development Engineer II based in Washington D.C. She brings a wealth of experience to the table after 6 years at Expedia Group contributing to our mission of powering global travel for everyone, everywhere. Now, let’s unpack Dominique’s journey at EG.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to join Expedia Group?
I did a software engineering internship during my final summer of undergrad, in 2017, with Homeaway (now Vrbo). This internship turned into a full-time position upon my graduation from Raford University with a B.S. in Computer Science.
As a young college student that didn’t have much travel experience, but had dreams of traveling the world, it sounded very exciting to join a company that was committed to making vacationing easier, more attainable and more comfortable for travelers. 6 years later and I’m still happy to be working here!
At EG, we’re constantly innovating in travel technology. Can you tell us about the specific challenge you’re tackling within your role as a Software Development Engineer?
As a software development engineer, I work on a team right now that is responsible for handling the fee data that is associated with listings on Expedia.com (guest fees, pet fees, etc.). We are currently focusing on unifying the Vrbo fee data and the Expedia fee data under one unified model and service. It’s really cool because this work will allow the company to save a lot of money by deprecating the old legacy systems.
What are some ways EG supports your professional learning and development?
One of the things I truly value at EG is the supportive management structure. My one-on-one meetings have been consistently productive and encouraging, which has helped me grow in my role. Additionally, I’m excited to take advantage of EG’s tuition reimbursement program to pursue my Master’s degree. This benefit is an amazing way for the company to invest in its employees’ development.
What makes Expedia Group a great place to work?
To me, it is so apparent that EG values and prioritizes diversity in the workplace. I love working alongside so many bright and talented Expedians with diverse identities. I learn so much from them and it’s extremely encouraging be in that kind of environment everyday. I would absolutely recommend a career at EG for anyone looking to do impactful work.
