From the Intern Program to the Graduate Program
Sahas first joined Expedia Group in June 2023 as part of the Intern Program, in the London office. After completing the program, he returned to the University of Manchester to complete his degree course, before rejoining EG in August 2024, as part of the Graduate Program, in a Commercial Sales & Account Management role.
We caught up with Sahas to understand what it’s like transitioning from being a student, to being on the Intern Program, and then the Graduate Program at EG. Find out how the experience was for Sahas, and the advice he has to share for future EG Interns and Graduates, below.
Sahas Srivastava Srivastava, Commercial Sales & Account Management Graduate, London, UK
What did you enjoy the most about the Expedia Group Intern program?
I really enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with the South Africa team. Engaging with colleagues from different backgrounds offered fresh perspectives and exposed me to new ways of thinking and problem-solving. This cultural exchange was not only enlightening but also helped me expand my own approach to work. Additionally, the program was instrumental in building my confidence and refining my soft skills. Through daily interactions and challenges, I developed better communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills that I know will be valuable in my personal and professional life for years to come.
What are the main differences between the Intern Program and the Graduate Program?
One of the biggest differences I noticed between the Intern Program and the Graduate Program was the scope and focus of each experience. During the internship, I had the chance to explore different areas of the company, which gave me a broader understanding of its culture and allowed me to connect with people across various departments. This exposure was incredibly valuable for building my network and getting a sense of the diverse roles within the organization.
In contrast, the Graduate Program has a more concentrated focus. It’s a more intense experience that emphasizes skill-building in specific areas, particularly honing effective communication, handling pushbacks, and building resilience when on calls. While the internship offered a wide-ranging look at the company, the Graduate Program is about mastering core competencies and deepening expertise. This progression feels like a natural step up from exploration to specialization, equipping me with the tools needed to excel in a more demanding, hands-on role.
What are the main differences between university life and work life as a Graduate?
The most noticeable difference between my university life at the University of Manchester, where I studied BSc Management, and my current life as a Graduate at EG lies in the structure and nature of learning. Coming from Gran Canaria, Spain, to Manchester, UK, my time at university was defined by a set routine -attending lectures, studying during fixed periods, and focusing on academic goals. While I lived off-campus, the university environment provided a clear framework for absorbing knowledge in a structured way. After lectures, I enjoyed studying with my friends and taking part in any activities possible (societies, bowling and more).
In contrast, life as a Graduate at EG involves continuous learning and growth in a more dynamic and diverse environment. Every day is an opportunity to broaden my horizons by engaging with colleagues from various backgrounds and experiences. This constant interaction not only enriches my understanding but also pushes me to think more flexibly and adapt to different challenges.
One noticeable difference is also the social aspect of life outside of work. At university, a vibrant student community made it easier to build friendships and maintain a lively social life. Now, living in a city can feel isolating at times, especially if you don’t already have friends or hobbies established. That’s why I believe it’s crucial to explore different activities, try new things, and make an effort to meet people outside of work. Building a social network in the city can make the adjustment easier and more fulfilling, offering a balance to the demands of professional life.
What advice do you have for future Interns joining the program?
My advice for anyone starting the Intern Program is to make the most of the opportunity to broaden your horizons. Take time to connect and communicate with as many people as possible across the company. Building relationships early on will not only expand your network but also help you to gain diverse perspectives on how different teams operate and contribute to the company’s goals.
I’d also recommend embracing this period as a chance to explore various departments and functions. Discovering what areas resonate most with you can help you to identify where you might want to focus your career, and build lasting connections. By keeping an open mind, and staying curious, you’ll lay a strong foundation for both personal and professional growth.
And what advice do you have for people starting on the Graduate Program?
For those starting on the EG Graduate Program, my advice would be to fully embrace the learning curve and understand that stepping outside of your comfort zone is a natural and essential part of the process. The role demands growth, and it’s through challenges and new experiences that you’ll develop the skills needed to succeed.
Building on your internship experience, focus on deepening your understanding of the role and how it fits into the bigger picture of the company. Make it a priority to connect with colleagues, especially those working in areas that align with your interests. These connections not only help you learn more about the field but also open doors for mentorship and future opportunities.
