What do you do at Expedia Group?
Machine Learning Engineer I (Team: Flights Machine Learning Engineering)

What tips can you share for folks applying to our Expedia Group roles?
For behavioral interviews: Practice answering behavioural questions in front of the mirror or get a colleague to practice mock interviews with you! If the interviewer asks you a question you’ve never seen before, it’s all right. Try to analyse the question. For example: Is it based on teamwork?

For technical interviews: Keep in mind you don’t need to know everything! Don’t start solving the problem and write code right away. Try to understand the problem first. Once you understand the problem, it is easier to solve it that way.

Lastly, enjoy the interviews. Take it as an opportunity to learn about the company and Expedians!

To prepare for the Online Technical Assessment round, students can refer to the book ‘Cracking the Coding Interview’ by Gayle Laakmann. It helps to focus on coding problems based on data structures and algorithms.

To prepare for the interview, it will help to be ready to solve coding problems, go through theory based on various object-oriented design patterns, practice your soft skills, how well you perform under adverse situations and be as candid as possible. Also, Expedia Group has 5 values that the candidate must be aware of one can read about those topics on the Careers Site.

As per my experience, all the interviewers were very nice and supportive if you are nervous they are there to help you.

Speaking as a software developer, Expedia Group has a huge number of projects and for someone aspiring to work on new technologies, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll find a role that suits you.

The best tip I can think of is…Practice speaking! Speak out loud to yourself and anyone willing to help you practice about yourself (resume, history, experience, etc.), technical concepts, and problems. In the process, you will gain awareness of what areas you most need to build strength in speaking/thinking through, and in the end, it will make you much more comfortable in interviews. In the same vein, if you’re especially introverted and ever in a sticky place during an interview, air on the side of speaking too much rather than not enough. When in doubt, speak through your thought process out loud. Don’t worry about whatever you’re asked to write down. The most important thing is establishing a connection with your interviewer and working with them to come to as great of a mutual understanding of one another as possible.
